Former England 7’s and Newcastle Falcons star Sam Egerton has returned home to Stafford Rugby Club as they move towards the new clubhouse.
Sam, pictured playing for Falcons against Osprey’s Dan Lydiate, graduated from Oxford University where he played in four Varsity Match-winning sides and became the first player since 1925 to score in three consecutive performances. His scintillating performances led him to winning the Alastair Hignell Medal as man of the match in both 2012 and 2014.
Egerton had spells at Yorkshire Carnegie and Harlequins before going on to play for England Sevens at the World Sevens Series in 2016 before going on to join Newcastle Falcons.
Sam has decided to leave his professional career behind to pursue his legal career and has decided to come back to where it all began. “It’s incredibly exciting to be back at Stafford where it all started, I had a great time playing for the youth teams and can’t wait to get going again for the senior team. The club’s new facilities look like they are going to be great, it’s thrilling to be at a club which has such huge ambitions” said Egerton.
Director of Rugby Andy Lewis is thrilled that Sam will be part of the team, saying “the club is tremendously excited to have Sam back who is a product of our fantastic junior section and has been a great ambassador for the club with appearances for both Newcastle Falcons and England 7’s. We are delighted that Sam has elected to join the club and support our journey to the new site with its fantastic facilities.”
Sam is expected to make his debut against Veseyans on Saturday 2nd February when ex-coach Dean Richards of Newcastle Falcons will also be at the club to watch the ex-Falcons star. Tickets for lunch at the club with Dean are available for £20 – please call 01785 211241 if interested.
