In spite of some really appalling weather that took it's toll on the fixtures calendar - particularly the friendlies - the Stafford U14s finished the season with an impressive record and having played some really great rugby. There was a marked level of development as the season progressed from individual players and the squad as a whole and, although the League finished with a defeat to Tamworth in the Cup Final, it is testament to the resolve of the lads that we managed to achieve runner up slot having played very limited amounts of rugby over the season. The final tally of games left the squad with 10 wins out of a total of 14 games with 7 wins out of 8 in the league matches, 2 wins out of 4 in friendlies and 1 win out of 2 in the cup matches (semi final and final) - a very creditable result.

The lads have shown that they can play smooth, organised and free flowing rugby and, when called for, can mount incredible defensive performances right on the try line - that have caused jitters in the coaching staff whilst simultaneously frustrating numerous opponents. They have shown bravery and resilience in the face of tough opposition and have shown some lovely handling skills and rugby nouse. They have shown a hunger for the ball and the work rate across the team has been much in evidence - looking for work if not coming their way during the natural course of a game. Players have made personal sacrifices in favour of the team and have put their bodies on the line in matches. Many players have expressed the desire to be the best player they can be and the physical presence of the whole team (looking quick, strong, powerful, agile and fit) has greatly improved. Agility and cardiovascular endurance have improved and the extension of drills into wrestling and judo style activity have improved stability and core strength. Tackling skills have improved markedly over the season and the squad have made strides in their lines of running and getting ball out wide. During the season 6 lads have been assimilated into the County School of Rugby setup and 3 of them have gone on to be selected for EPDG - all very impressive - and testament to the strength in depth that we enjoy at this age group.

Many thanks to the opposition teams that have welcomed us and have come to play at the Cathedral, Stafford RUFC, the parents, the coaches, but most of all to the lads whose enthusiasm and commitment makes it all worthwhile - Roll on next season!!
